A Star Is Born (2018) is a musical drama, praised both by critics and viewers, that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. From anger and sadness to happiness and acceptance. You will feel all of them!
A Star Is Born, directed and produced by Bradley Cooper, is the third remake of the 1937 movie with the same title. It follows the music careers and love story of famous country rock singer Jackson, “Jack” (Bradley Cooper) and waitress/aspiring singer Ally (Lady Gaga).
The pair first meets at a bar, where Ally sings a tribute to the famous Edith Piaf. Jack is completely blown away by her voice and charismatic persona, so he decides to take her under his wing and help her fulfilling her dream career.
“Look, talent comes everywhere, but having something to say and a way to say it to have people listen to it, that’s a whole other bag.”
As they spend more and more time together, Jack and Ally start falling in love, but the relationship becomes very complicated and full of up and downs.
While Ally’s career starts taking off, Jack feels threatened and overpowered, aware that his golden days are long gone. His lover’s rising success leads him to fall in the deep end of alcoholism and addiction, causing much pain to both himself and Ally.
A Star Is Born is an amazingly told story of love, addiction and loss. Ally and Jack’s love story is powerful and emotional. It shows the viewer how hard it is to live with an addiction and how challenging it is to see a person you love consumed by one.
It is hard to watch Jack in despair and constantly inebriated at many events where he is supposed to be supporting his wife’s success and to observe Ally’s pain and helplessness. As much as she tries to help him, it is impossible for her to do so.
“Music is essentially twelve notes between any octave. Twelve notes and the octave repeats. It’s the same story told over and over. All the artist can offer the world is how they see those twelve notes.”
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are perfect in their roles and their chemistry is obvious on the screen. Every scene they share is a quiet explosion of love and intimacy. Lady Gaga is also the perfect choice for Ally. The character is not an easy one to play but the actress/singer’s performance is dramatic and intense.
But what really turns A Star Is Born into a masterpiece is the original soundtrack. From “Shallow” to “I’ll Never Love Again”, the songs in the movie are so powerful and beautifully performed that you can’t help loving them. Both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper deliver an amazing performance of each original song!
A Star Is Born is a movie that leaves a mark, and the great story and acting will make you want to watch it over and over again! And listen to every single song on the original soundtrack too!
