Enola Holmes: Remember To Be Tough

The new and much anticipated mystery Enola Holmes (2020) landed on Netflix last week and it’s already got people talking!

Based on the book series of the same name, Enola Holmes tells the story of Enola (Milly Bobby Brown), the irreverent and charismatic sister of the much more famous English detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill).

"I don't need friends. I have my own company."

Enola has been living in the English country side with her mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter), ever since her father passed away when she was very young, and her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft (Sam Claflin) left home soon after to pursue their respective careers.

Her mother is the only family member Enola can always count on and she taught her everything she knows in life, from literature to excellent fighting skills.

Her mother was always there for her and that is why Enola is shocked to wake up one morning and find no trace of her in the house. Eudoria is simply gone without any sort of explanation!

The girl decides to call her two older brothers to the rescue, but since they haven’t seen her since she was little, it is hard for them to connect with her. And Mycroft is actually quite unhappy with how their mother raised Enola to be independent and carefree in a time where women had to follow the etiquette and marry rich.

"A wild and dangerous woman brought up a wild child."

Although Sherlock is nicer and more understanding towards the sister, Enola understands that she needs to find her mother and solve the mystery herself, as one of the lessons Eudoria taught her was to always be independent and think of herself first!

The adventure, that leads her to London, will be full of obstacles and intriguing clues to solve, and although Enola wants to survive by herself, she will find an unexpected accomplice and friend in the young Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge).

"You're a man when I tell you you're a man."

Will Enola find her mother and will she find the answers she is looking for, and the right path to follow?

Enola Holmes is a very captivating movie and it will leave you addicted and desperately seeking for answers alongside the main character.

And the main reason is surely the fascinating character of Enola and her great personality.

Although young and inexperienced when it comes to the real world, the girl is very strong and independent and she constantly fights, just liker her mother, against the gender inequality that was still so very present at that time.

Enola just wants to be her own person and she doesn’t care much about being a “lady” and finding the perfect husband.

"You need to make some noise if you want to be heard."

Milly Booby Brown’s performance is brilliant and although very young, the British actress is proving herself to be a rising star in Hollywood.

While both Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin are great as the Holmes brothers, Brown is the one that really stands out in the movie.

The movie delivers a great message to young girls and women out there to follow their dreams and to not be scared if they are different from the rest.

It also reflects on a time when women weren’t allowed to vote and the suffragettes movement that helped change that.

In Enola Holmes, the Suffragettes fight for the Reform Bill to pass, in order to give women more representation in the U.K. parliament.

Enola Holmes is a must-watch for all the Sherlock Holmes fans out there and all the ones that want to discover more about his energetic and lovable little sister!
