Fractured: Escaping Reality

By: Ava Rogha

Fractured (2019) focuses on a family of three driving to Minneapolis on Thanksgiving. The action starts when Peri (Lucy Capri), who is the six year old daughter of the protagonist Ray (Sam Worthington), realizes she cannot find her compact mirror. Ray pulls over by a construction site so he can look for it. His wife, Joanne (Lily Rabe), proceeds the search in a public bathroom, whereas Ray looks in the car. While they’re busy searching for their daughter’s toy, Peri walks off towards an empty pit. It’s not until Peri notices a street dog that she starts calling for Ray’s name, but even then, it might be too late.

"I nearly had you, didn't I?"

Ray rushes towards Peri and tries to scare the dog away, but in the matter of seconds, Peri trips over and falls into the empty pit. Ray jumps in immediately, attempting to save his daughter.

This is the scene that really gets the movie started. Even though I didn’t expect Peri and Ray to survive that fall, they both do. The parents immediately rush over to the hospital to get Peri checked. Now, this is where you have to be patient. The next twenty minutes will be boring and you might want to tune off, but don’t!

If you’re familiar with Brad Anderson’s previous movies and shows, including The Sinner and The Call, you may already be expecting a psychological twist. Fractured is just as mind-blowing as them, if not better. So, keep reading and keep watching!

When Peri is checked by Dr. Bertham (Stephen Tobolowski), he suggests a CAT scan to make sure she’s not suffering subdural hematoma. Joanne and Peri follow Dr. Bertham into the lab. Meanwhile, Ray is sitting in the waiting room and expecting his wife and daughter to come back. But they never do!

"I'm gonna wait right here for you when you get out."

This is where the movie started to catch my full attention. Ray is clearly not in the right state of mind due to his traumatic fall, and heads quickly to the desk to ask for his family. But, it turns out they were never registered into the system. In fact, none of the doctors can remember ever seeing Peri and Joanne, which drives Ray crazy.

At this point, I had so many questions. Doesn’t Ray have a phone to contact his wife? Why does it seem like the hospital is hiding something from Ray? It’s too surreal! He was with them just a while ago!

You may think that the scenes are a bit exaggerated, but that’s what adds to the action and the length of the movie. However, you will be surprised to see how straightforward the plot really is!

"I just want to see my wife and daughter."

Ray contacts the police and gets them involved in the case. He accuses the hospital of abducting his family, which the police officers believe to some extent. I mean, he has enough evidence, but the hospital’s CCTV footage really throws Ray’s theory off. That is when I started having doubts. It’s starting to look like Ray is making all of this up. But, that’s not the case! Or at least so we think...

Ray and the police officers drive back to the spot of the accident and notice there’s blood all over the pit, almost too much blood for Peri’s harmless injury. This is when the police arrests Ray for the murder of his daughter and wife, which is unacceptable to Ray. It appears like Ray has been escaping reality all this time.

"There's something wrong with this place."

Ray escapes from the police and drives back to the hospital to get to the bottom of everything. And from here onwards, the movie just gets ten times better.

The last fifteen minutes of the movie are action-filled and super confusing. But, there will be several plot twists during the last few minutes that will blow your mind. Will Ray finally be reunited with his family, or is he going crazy? You will have all your questions answered in the end, but this movie requires your full attention and patience. So stay put and enjoy watching!
