Brandon and Callie: Modern day Romeo and Juliet

Updated: Jun 15, 2020

By: Ava Rogha

Callie Jacob (Maia Mitchell) is finally accepted into a loving home after having lived in different foster homes for six long years. And even though the 16 year old struggles to trust her new foster parents, Lena and Stef Foster, they welcome her with open arms into their family and treat her as their own.

The Fosters (2013 – 2018) deals with the everyday drama that occurs in the Foster’s large family of seven. Long story short, Lena and Stef had already adopted Stef’s biological son Brandon and hispanic twins Mariana and Jesus before they welcomed Callie into their family. Additionally, Callie ends up bringing her biological brother, Jude, into this home to save him from their previous violent foster parents and that is how this big family is created! Complicated, right? But trust me, it's worth it!

The show starts by exploring Callie’s journey into getting adopted and her relationship with the other kids in the house, focusing on the one with new-found foster brother Brandon Foster (David Lambert), the “perfect” child who rarely makes any mistakes. However, ever since Callie came into his life, that changed drastically. He used to date popular high school girl, Talya (Madisen Beaty) before meeting Callie, but the relationship ends shortly after, as he starts to develop a romantic attraction for his soon to be foster-sister. Ouch!

“I never realized until today that for us to be together, you have to give up everything. And

that’s not really fair of me to ask.”

The Fosters touches upon “forbidden love” romance between fosters siblings in particular and the ups and downs that come with it. Brandon is a naïve 16 year old and he is willing to do anything for love, even though he isn’t legally allowed to date Callie.

The outlaws as Brandon likes to call himself and Callie, bond over their passion for music and Brandon is the first person in the house Callie is able to trust. As a matter of fact, Brandon is so infatuated by Callie he is willing to risk Callie’s chance for adoption just to spend time with her. However, it’s not until Lena (Sherri Saum) and Stef’s (Teri Polo) wedding that the outlaws share an oh-so anticipated kiss. From this day forward, I can imagine that you will obsess over this couple’s forbidden relationship as much as I did!

“I think we might be outlaws, I think we might be in love.”

When Callie’s brother, Jude (Hayden Byerly) catches them in action at the wedding, Callie fears the Fosters won’t adopt them anymore, which is why she runs away and is placed in a group home for girls. But luckily that doesn’t lead to Jude and Callie not getting adopted by the Fosters, even though they have heard the shocking news!

As the Fosters are fighting for Jude and Callie’s adoption, Brandon and Callie are secretly seeing each other. Just like the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, they cannot get enough of each other, even though they know it’s wrong. It’s not until Callie and Jude’s adoption that they decide to call things off for good…or at least for a very long time...

“We didn’t do anything wrong.”

These outlaws make it difficult for us to recognise wrong and right and they may even become your new OTP. They make good siblings, great friends and even a better couple, but deep down, we know their relationship can hurt their family and a safe home for Callie.

I bet you’re tempted to give The Fosters a go because of Brandon and Callie’s forbidden love, but believe me, there are plenty of other story lines to look forward to in the show, including the twin’s learning about their birth parents and their crazy love life.
