The Ring Vs Rings: Seven Days of Fear

Updated: Nov 1, 2020

By: Ava Rogha

There are certain horror classics we’re all familiar with, The Ring (2002) being one of them. But did you know that this famous horror movie has a sequel and a trequel?

"You start to play it and it's like somebody's nightmare. And then this woman comes on, smiling at you, right? Seeing you... through the screen. Then when it's over, your phone rings, someone knows you watched the tape... and what they say is, "You will die in seven days".

The Ring is a spine-chilling horror movie that tells the story of a family, who are unlucky enough to watch a cursed tape that, believe it or not, leads to their predicted death.

The movie starts with the death of a teenager, who was killed due to this urban legend and the plot passes on to Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), who visits the cabin where the teenager, Katie (Amber Tamblyn) was killed.

There, she discovers the disturbing cursed tape about a girl named Samara Morgan (Daveigh Chase), who was murdered at a very young age and is now supposedly out for revenge. Rachel cannot help but watching the tape, but bringing the tape home has its consequences.

Her son, Aidan (David Dorfman) accidentally puts it on and her ex, Noah Clay (Martin Henderson) gets involved once he finds out she’s watched it. And suddenly, several people are scheduled to die in seven days after Samara’s “ghost” has called to inform them. That is unless, they copy Samara’s disturbing tape and pass it on to another victim.

"Seven days."

It’s like Mary Worth all over again, either you pay respect to Samara, who was ungracefully strangled to death and thrown in a well to drown, or you die! As a journalist ourselves, we totally get the urge to let our curiosity get the best of us, but some scenarios are better to stay out of.

Watching this movie will probably lead to sleepless nights and you will avoid picking up your phone for the next few days, but the amount of jump scares and hair-rising moments you experience while watching it on a night with good friends make it all worth it!

Although I highly despite supernatural horrors, this one is by far one of my favorites. And even though the plot couldn’t have sounded more fabricated, the creators of the movie have successfully managed to make Samara’s horrific story come to life. And if you’ve seen this horror movie, I’m sure you’ve seen the sequel too, which is about just as good. However, the real reason we’re here, is the trequel, Rings (2016).

"Before you die, you see the ring."

I had high expectations for Rings, especially considering I really enjoyed the first two movies.

But Rings does definitely not do the first two movies justice. It tells the story of a couple, Julia (Matilda Lutz) and Holt (Alex Roe), who go through the same process as Rachel. They watch the tape, the phone rings, and suddenly they’re both cursed to die seven days later. Just like Rachel, Julia starts seeing things and experiences paranormal activities leading up to her death day. So, yes the plot is just as gripping as The Ring, but when it comes to the actual movie, it was executed poorly.

The cinematics are rather boring and not nearly as scary as the ones in the first movie. The symbols and the music used in the first one contribute to its scariness, but Rings successfully fails in this field too. And as mentioned, I am not a big fan of supernatural horror movies, in which Rings is the perfect example of! The special effects do not impress me and the scenes are not nearly as frightening as the ones in the first one. I must admit, I had to skip parts of the movie when I first watched it due to the lack of excitement.

"You want to know about the girl...in the well."

This remake is a definite flop and I will not revisit Rings this Halloween.

However, if you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch tonight, then give The Ring a go if you still haven’t watched it. Only if you dare!
