5 Beloved TV Couples That Are Actually Toxic

By: Elena Donatone

TV series give us the opportunity to worship seemingly “perfect" romantic couples and to dream of finding something similar one day!

But what if some of the oh-so-loved relationships we see on screen were actually some of the most unhealthy ones ever?

Here is our Top 5 most toxic couples!

1. Ross and Rachel (Friends)

"We were on a break!"

Although it may seem controversial, the beloved and popular couple from the sitcom Friends (1994-2004) is not as perfect and dreamy as one may think!

Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) have always been described as one of the best couples in the history of television and that could not be further form the truth!

The two start off as friends, although Ross has a big crush on Rachel since high school, and only in season 2 they actually start dating. But the love story is very toxic from the start and both Ross and Rachel seem to be quite childish and possessive most of the time.

Although Rachel can be selfish and immature, Ross is the one that makes the relationship unhealthy! From his insecurity and lack of support when Rachel finally gets her dream job to his jealousy and possessiveness whenever her boss is nice to her.

This couple should not be as loved as it is, especially when Friends offers us amazing relationships such as Chandler and Monica!

2. Allison and Luther (The Umbrella Academy)

"I've compared every man I've ever met to you."

The popular hit-series offers us a couple of very entertaining and interesting relationships, but Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampan) and Luther’s (Tom Hopper) one is surely the one that everybody loves. But are the two really that suited for each other?

Although Allison and Luther are yet to have a proper romantic relationship, their platonic one is at the centre of many episodes of the show.

The two are part of the seven gifted members of the Umbrella Academy and they were both adopted by billionaire industrialist Reginald Hargreeves when they were kids. So the first problem that stands out in their relationship is… they are actually siblings!

Surely, Allison and Luther are not bad people and they are quite likeable characters by themselves, but every scene they share is very insufferable and they tend to bring out the worst in each other.

Luther, who is supposed to be the leader of the Umbrella Academy, is often distracted by his infatuation for the girl and he more than once prioritises Allison over his other siblings.

Allison, on her end, can be quite selfish and she always tends to minimise the fact that they are siblings, when it is actually a big deal!

3. Rory and Dean (Gilmore Girls)

"You don't want to be with me Rory."

The famous drama Gilmore Girls (2000-2007) has shown us quite a few romantic bonds over the years and some of them were so close to perfection! But unfortunately some others were quite questionable and unhealthy!

And Rory and Dean’s relationship stands out from the rest.

Rory (Alexis Bledel) meets handsome and charming Dean (Jared Padalecki) at the start of the show and almost every single girl watching developed an instant crush on the boy! And what’s not to like, right?

Unfortunately, as it turns out, quite a lot!

Rory is not perfect and she can be quite selfish when she wants to be, but she is generally a good girlfriend to Dean.

The boy, on the other hand, is very controlling and obsessed with Rory in an unhealthy way.

When the girl develops a friendship with the town's mystery boy Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), Dean acts out quite a lot and embarrasses Rory. Even to the point of screaming at her in front of other people!

Although his jealousy is not misplaced, as Rory and Jess do end up together, Dean is a very toxic and manipulative boyfriend. All hidden underneath a sweet smile and apparent good manners!

4.Daenerys and Jon (Game of Thrones)

"Sometimes duty is the death of love."

Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Jon ( Kit Harrington) united to form a hit couple in the very last season of Game of Thrones (2011-2019).

Many fans wanted the two together for years and their wish finally came true!

But the pair is not as idyllic as people think!

Leaving aside the very important detail that Daenerys is actually Jon’s aunt, the two have no chemistry and quite a rocky relationship!

Although the characters are among the most interesting and strong ones in the show, they just don’t work well together.

Their personalities are very different to begin with. While Jon is reserved and a very selfless person, Daenerys is ruthless and driven by power.

Luckily, Jon realises his loved one’s obsession with the throne in time to stop her, but not before giving us very forgettable and unhealthy moments of controversial love…

5. Mike and Eleven (Strangers Things)

"I dump your ass.”

The young love between Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Eleven (Milly Bobby Brown) in the popular Sci-Fi Stranger Things (2016- Present) is surely not the best part of the praised show!

Although Eleven is one of my favourite characters in the series, I think her relationship with Mike is quite toxic.

While they were great friends in season 1, their crush on each other prevailed and they became an item in season 3.

Both Mike and Eleven clearly don’t know how to be in a healthy relationship and they tend to act out at the silliest things, and have many misunderstandings due to a lack of communication.

They also forget about their friends most of the time and they prefer spending time alone than helping the group out when they need them the most!

But their love is not as bad as the other ones in this list. And I want to forgive the two, as they are both young and inexperienced when it comes to relationships!

Hopefully they will get better in the upcoming seasons!
