If you are tired of re-watching popular sitcoms like Friends (1994 - 2004) and you are looking for something fresh and less main stream, then Schitt's Creek (2015 - 2020) is the perfect choice for you!
While I had heard of this Canadian Sitcom before, I have just watched it a couple of weeks ago. And I am 100% in love with it!
Maybe it's because it's such an original and hilarious concept or maybe it's because it's not as popular as other sitcoms, but I feel the need to share my love for this show with you all!
Here are the 5 reasons why you should binge Schitt's Creek!
1. The plot
“I'm trying very hard not to connect with people right now.”
While so many sitcoms tend to have the same recurrent plot, from a group of friends or roommates and their various debacles to a typical family life, Schitt's Creek wants to separate itself from all of them.
The sitcom follows the life of a former rich family that, after going bankrupt, is forced to live in a motel in a small and rather quirky town they once bought as a joke.
The initial plot is already original and hilarious and it only gets better.
Episode after episode, we witness the Rose family struggling with daily activities that all of us deal with on a regular basis. From finding a job to joining the quirky town's activities, the family finds it hard to fit in with people who aren't as rich as they used to be!
2. The dialogue
“I plan on popping a pill, crying a bit, and falling asleep early.”
Sitcoms like New Girl (2011 - 2018) and Modern Family (2009 - 2020) are known for their funny dialogues and wittiness, but Schitt's Creek takes its dialogues to another level!
All the characters are hilarious and the Rose family will win over your heart, with all their sarcastic moments and hilarious comebacks!
I found myself laughing so hard in so many different occasions and I have to say the dialogue and funny lines in this series are some of the best I have ever heard!
While all the characters are hysterical, I admit my favourite lines and comebacks were always delivered by Moira (Catherine O'Hara) and David (Daniel Levy).
3. The character development
"There is nothing wrong with asking for what you deserve"
The Rose family is very entitled and snobbish at the start of the series and while they are hilarious, it is hard for you to relate or care too much about their lives.
Fortunately, episode after episode, each of them learns about the real world and how to be better and more humble people.
From Alexis, who slowly becomes less selfish and more focused on her career, to David, who finds love with somebody who really cares about him, the characters evolve so much over the course of 6 seasons.
By the end of the first season, you will already love them all like they were your own family and you will root for them to succeed and be kinder to one another!
The character development they experience over the arc of 6 seasons is brilliant and well-written. None of the character developments are rushed or out of place and every single member of the Rose family grows exponentially both personally and professionally.
4. The acting
“Allow me to offer you some advice. Take a thousand naked pictures of yourself now. You may currently think, “Oh, I’m too spooky,” or “Nobody wants to see these tiny boobies,” but believe me: one day you will look at those photos with much kinder eyes and say, ‘Dear God, I was a beautiful thing!’”
While sitcoms are not usually known for great acting, Schitt's Creek changes the game including brilliant actors in its cast!
From Eugene Levy, famous form the American Pie franchise, to Catherine O'Hara, known as Kevin's mum from Home Alone, Schitt's Creek delivers amazing acting that makes you care about the characters and their debacles.
A mention is owed to Daniel Levy who, even if not as known as some of the other actors, shines in its performance. His character was my favourite in the sitcom!
5. The message
"I just thought, in spite of all the hardships, we found ourselves coming together, the kids, you and me, as a family"
Last but not least, the aspect I enjoyed the most about the series was the overall message it sends to its audience.
The Rose family is quite entitled and not used to the life of your average Canadian because of their rich past.
However, once they go bankrupt, they have to get used to a different and more humble life.
At first all they want is to sell the town to be able to get away from their own nightmare and become as rich as they once were.
Luckily, later in the series they understand how much Schitt's Creek actually means to them and how being rich doesn't mean anything when all your relationships and successes are fake and shallow.
I think this message is brilliant and it helps people understand that fame and money don't fill your life up unless you have a family that loves you, and respect for yourself and other people.
What are you waiting for? Binge all 6 seasons of Schitt's Creek on Netflix now!
