5 Of The Best Horror Movies Ever

By: Elena Donatone

Horror movies make us face our biggest fears, experience tons of jump scares and have an amazing time all together.

Here are some of our favourites!

1. Annabelle (2014)

"That doll. We have to get rid of it."

When John (Ward Horton) gives the vintage doll known as Annabelle to his expecting wife Mia (Annabelle Wallis) as a present, neither of them can possibly foresee what the toy will bring. But when their neighbours and friends get murdered in their own home and one of the home invaders kills herself in John and Mia’s place, the doll suddenly starts hunting the couple and putting the family in danger… What horror does Annabelle hide behind its creepy appearance and how far will the doll go to torment John, Mia and subsequently their newborn daughter?

The 2014 supernatural horror is both intriguing and terrifying. Annabelle managed to creep me out scene after scene. And the prequel Annabelle: Creation (2017) and the sequel Annabelle Comes Home (2019) are just as entertaining and scary!

2. The Grudge (2004)

"The whole time I was in that house I felt something was wrong. What happened there?"

Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is an American exchange student and carer, who lives in Tokyo with her boyfriend Jason (Doug McCarthy). When she is assigned to help an elderly woman with dementia in her house, Karen wants to prove herself as a great carer. But what she doesn’t know is that the house is under a mysterious and terrifying curse and there might be no escape from it once you visit the place…

With scary ghosts that will haunt you at night and a creepy atmosphere throughout the movie, The Grudge is one of the most frightening and spine-chilling movies I’ve ever seen and it proves once again Japanese horror movies are master pieces!

3. The Strangers (2008)

"There's someone out there."

Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) arrive to their summer home after a friend’s wedding, awkwardness and tension are high as the woman just rejected the man’s marriage proposal. But their night is about to get weirder and scarier after a girl knocks on their door asking if Tamara is home. Since they don’t know who that is, they turn the stranger away, not knowing she will come back with two other people wearing masks. The strangers manages to break into the house. They terrorise Kristen and James for the entire night, playing with their sanity while the couple tries to save themselves.

The 2008 psychological horror kept me anxious and on the edge of my seat, wondering what the masked strangers would do scene after scene!

4. Sinister (2012)

"Bad things happen to good people and they still have to have their story told."

Ellison (Ethan Hawke) is a true crime writer, who just moved to a new house with his wife and two children to write a new book. As soon as Ellison finds a film projector and disturbing footage in his new attic, he decides to dig into the mystery with the help of a Deputy. All the footage depicts various family murders and Ellison realises that his new house and the film projector are haunting him as he gets closer to the truth...

Sinister is a captivating and scary supernatural horror that makes you wonder what is hidden behind those films and what horrible tragedies they relate to…

5. The Conjuring (2013)

"The devil exists. God exists. And for us, as people, our very destiny hinges on which we decide to follow."

An American family of seven, led by father Roger (Ron Livingston) and mother Carolyn (Lili Taylor) moves into a new house in Rhode Island. They soon start experiencing paranormal events. Carolyn wakes up day after day with big bruises on her body, not knowing how she got them, and the healthy family dog is found inexplicably dead outside the house one day.

When Carolyn decides to contact demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by the talented Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, the duo starts analysing and searching the house for clues of paranormal entities. What they will find and have to face is scarier than they expected, and an exorcism will have to be performed before it’s too late…

Based on real-life demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren and the assumed paranormal cases they dealt with, The Conjuring is addictive and completely nerve-racking! And the sequel, The Conjuring 2, set in Enfield, England is even more exciting!
