Curon: There Are Two Wolves Inside All of Us

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

I have always found international TV series very fascinating and addictive. Maybe because of the different cultures that are portrayed, or maybe simply because it’s a breath of fresh air from the many American series we always tend to watch. Well, Curon (2020) is one of the best ones I have watched in a while!

Curon is an Italian supernatural horror series, which only came out last week. Although it wasn’t advertised much by Netflix U.K., the series has a considerate number of followers already. Being regarded as the new dark, it is a must-watch for all the international and horror aficionados out there!

It follows the lives of twins Mauro (Federico Russo) and Daria (Margherita Morchio) and their mother Anna (Valeria Bilello).

Anna used to live in the peculiar town of Curon, Northern Italy, when she was young, but her father forced her to leave after her mother’s mysterious suicide. From then on, Anna moved to Milan and raised her kids in the city. Although far away from her past, Anna cannot escape the horrific memories of the night her mother committed suicide.

In her recurring nightmares about her mother's suicide, she can see a person that looks exactly like herself, holding a gun at her mother.

When Mauro and Daria become teenagers, Anna decides to go back to Curon to find answers about her past, and the mysterious events that unfolded before she escaped.

The town is just as strange as Anna remembered it to be, and as soon as the family arrives in Curon, weird and inexplicable things start happening once again. But it’s not until Anna's sudden disappearance that the twins decide to find out Curon’s hidden secrets in order to save their mother.

The series is quite original and there are many factors that make it one of the best views of 2020 so far.

The town of Curon itself is mesmerising and it acts like a character more than a location. I believe the series is as mysterious and addictive as it is mainly because of the town. All the storylines and characters, in fact, revolve around Curon and its scary legends and unforgettable landscape. And what makes it even better is that Curon is a real town in Italy that you can visit!

Curon is located in Northern Italy, precisely in the province of South Tyrol. It is a beautiful place, both for the breath-taking views and the mysterious history and legends surrounding it.

As the series narrates, Curon used to belong to Austria and it was only after WW1 that Italy pronounced it part of its territory. From then on, both Austrians and Italians have lived together in one area, not always in peace. In fact, in the series, both Italians and Austrians characters are shown and you can hear both the Italian and German language spoken in each episode.

But what really turns this town into a famous landmark and the centre of the series, is the famous bell tower. As frequently shown in Curon, the tower is partly submerged into the lake. That is because in 1950, after the construction of a dam, the part of the town where the tower is located was flooded and submerged and all the inhabitants had to move out. Legends say, although the tower does not have bells anymore, people can still hear them ringing sometimes.

The series takes the mystery around the town and its legends and creates a masterpiece, full of horror and supernatural elements.

And it’s the partly submerged tower that is employed in Curon as a mean to describe human nature. As told in the series, we all have a dark side that is “submerged” like the tower, a side we hide from the world.

When we try to suppress it and we avoid it, that’s when that part will come out for everybody to see.

As Mauro and Daria’s teacher, Klara (Anna Ferzetti), explains to them: we all have two wolves inside of us. One is the kind and loving one the one that cares about others. The other is the angry and dangerous one, full of darkness. And you may ask, since we have both of them inside us, which one prevails? Well, whichever one you feed.

Curon will end on a cliffhanger and leave you desperately waiting for a new season. So, what are you waiting for? Binge-watch the seven episodes of the Italian series, now streaming on Netflix.
