Good Trouble: The Big City Life

By: Ava Rogha

Good Trouble (2019 – present) follows Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana’s (Cierra Ramirez) hectic adulthood after graduating college and moving to Los Angeles to start their careers. You probably already know these girls from The Fosters (2013 - 2018), but if you don’t, learn more about them in our review of The Fosters here!

"I miss you, and I want to be best friends again too."

Living with your sister and best friend sounds amazing, but once they move in together, they realize there are plenty of obstacles they need to overcome. It all starts with Callie’s low budget of 800 Dollars a month and the hot guy in the building, Gael (Tommy Martinez) who Mariana is crushing on. But, knowing Callie, she is quick to introduce herself to this hottie and ruining Mariana’s chances.

Additionally, the rest of the family, that you probably already know from The Fosters, comes to visit the girls at the Coterie during the two seasons. That was the main reason I gave this show a go with an open mind in the first place. And it surely didn’t disappoint!

"We're Adams Fosters. We don't give up. We don't give in. We fight."

Good Trouble is fresh, original, scandalous and far from the vibe you are used to from The Fosters. Plenty of new characters will be introduced, mainly the residents of the Coterie, and even though they seem unfamiliar at first, you will learn to love them almost as much as you do with Callie and Mariana.

The girls' growth since The Fosters is interesting to see, but what’s even more interesting is how much they’re holding back and struggling in their early to mid-twenties.

Mariana is still childlike and pure, yet open to explore the crazy LA life. Callie is uptight and strict, making it difficult for her and Mariana to communicate. Yet surprisingly, Callie is the one who gets herself involved in a love triangle first. With a wealthy lawyer, Jamie (Beau Mirchoff) and the boy next door, Gael, who is a graphic designer and an artist.

"Thank you for the most interesting Valentine's Day in recent memory."

Jamie and Callie have the same values so to speak, but their political views are what causes conflict in their romance. Gael on the other hand, is bisexual and doesn’t want anything serious with Callie as he is still exploring his sexuality. Neither is the perfect fit for Callie, but she is definitely falling in love with one of them!

Mariana on the other hand, hits it off with her co-worker, Raj (Dhruv Uday Singh) at her new workplace, Speckulate, which is highly male-dominated. Raj is intelligent and seems to be one of the few guys at her workplace who respects and understands women in tech. But, he’s obviously not the only guy! Mariana and her boss, Evan, form a close bond during her time at Speckulate to the point where she gets confused about who she wants to be romantically involved with.

"Raj is a great guy. Maybe it was a mistake, or maybe it was a red flag."

As for the rest of the characters, I don’t want to spoil too much, but I will quickly introduce them! Alice (Sherry Cola) is the manager of the Coterie and one of the first characters we meet. She has a passion for stand-up comedy and is trying to come out to her parents as homosexual. Then there’s the teacher in the block, Davia (Emma Hunton). Davia is kindhearted and forms a close bond with Dennis (Josh Pence), who also lives at the Coterie. Dennis has a lot of secrets who he has dealt with alone until Davia came along. And finally, there’s the activist Malika (Zuri Adele). Malika and Callie get along from the start, and Callie does everything she can to help and support her activism.

"I read the Coterie Biatches thread, Mariana."

The show is presented in flashbacks and flashforwards, which gives the audience a sense of what has happened and what is going to happen in each episode to spice things up!

Another addition to this show is the effect we’ve all been yearning for: the opportunity of seeing how a situation would have ended if the characters spoke their minds instead of hiding their feelings. Some of the scenes are even filmed twice showing us two different outcomes of the same situation. These additions may be confusing at first, but I guarantee you that you haven’t seen something this cool before!

I highly recommend this show as it is entertaining and educational at the same time. According to Andrea Vorlicek (@amvorlicek) on Twitter, it covers important issues such as BLM, anxiety, gender equality, incarceration, racism and poverty discrimination.

To wrap it up with some extra good news, Good Trouble has been renewed for a third season! The duo announced on their Instagram that they had to take a break from filming due to the Coronavirus global pandemic. However, according to Maia Mitchell, when they come back, they will be coming back "hot". We can't wait to see more of the two's dramatic and joyful moments!
