If you’re someone who’s into fantasy with a mixture of mystery and a lot of comedy, this show might just be the one for you!
Mystic Pop-Up Bar (2020) revolves around a 500 year old spirit, Wol-Ju (Hwang Jung-Eum), who was sent to the living realm to repent for the sins she committed in the past.
In the living realm, Wol-Ju has been tasked with settling grudges of 100,000 souls and to comfort them.
At the mystic pop up bar, Wol-Ju is accompanied by Manager Gwi (Choi Won-Young), who has also been assigned to work in the living realm as punishment.
Before Gwi was assigned to help out Wol-Ju, he worked for the Afterlife Police Academy but was demoted to working at the pop up bar.
For those accustomed with Korean dramas, the exterior of the Mystic Pop-Up Bar will look completely familiar. It looks like the typical drinking tent called Pojangmacha, where characters from various K-dramas, including this one, would be seen drinking Soju (Korean alcohol) and crying over their problems.
For those that are new to Korean dramas, just know that it’s the perfect place for broken souls who need to settle their grudges while indulging in alcohol. Seeing the mystic pop up bar in the style of Pojangmacha makes perfect sense!
The K-drama starts with Wol-Ju and manager Gwi struggling to find people willing enough to open up to them with their grudges. What’s even more frustrating is that Wol-Ju is on a tight schedule. She needs to settle the last 10 grudges in just a few weeks, but seeing as people aren’t disclosing their problems, Wol-Ju is restless and angry more than ever!
Now insert Kang-Bae (Yook Sung-Jae), a cheerful young man who has the ability to make people confess their truth with just one touch. To some people, that might seem like a great ability to have, but to Kang-Bae it’s a burden as he can’t commit to serious relationships, whether they're platonic or romantic.
Kang-Bae meets the mystic pop up bar duo and things start to get interesting. Both sides need help, so they unite their powers to finally settle the last ten grudges.
With Kang-Bae’s cuteness, Wol-Ju’s anger management and Manager Gwi’s dad jokes the crew get up to all sort of shenanigans. From helping people with their grudges and entering people sub consciousness, to fighting evil spirits and finding out what happened 500 years ago with Wol-Ju, in order to finally settle everything!
This K-Dram is extremely hilarious and silly, yet very emotional and heart-breaking at the same time! You won't be disappointed!
