The Sinner Season 3: What Lies Underneath The Surface

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

The anthology crime mystery The Sinner (2017-Present) is back with a brand-new season and it is just as great as the previous ones!

The third season focuses on a new crime mystery and new characters, with the only exception of Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman), who is back as the lead detective once again.

Just as the previous two seasons, season three follows a person who committed a shocking and mysterious crime, and the investigation behind the reasons.

The main character Jamie Burns, played by the talented Matt Bomer, is the classic family man who lives in the suburbs, with an expectant wife and a secure job as a high school teacher. His life seems perfect and predictable, but that soon changes when his former college friend, Nick (Chris Messina), shows up unannounced at his doorstep one night.

"This is the next step. You and me. This is how we break through."

The tension between the two is clear, they are both hiding something from their past.

As Jamie and Nick go for a drive the same night, they get into an accident and Nick dies on the scene.

That is when Jamie’s life gets turned upside down, as the police and lead detective Harry Ambrose consider the accident out of the ordinary and a possible murder. And Jamie is the prime suspect!

As the series goes on, Jamie’s past and motives become clearer and clearer, as Harry gets closer to him. Although the detective knows his job is to find out if Jamie killed his friend and to catch him if he did, he finds a strange attraction towards him and his obscure view on life.

"It seems like your relationship with Mr. Burns is very complicated."

In fact, Jamie is way more than a family man and a normal high school teacher. Behind the surface lies a man with a complicated past and radical views on how life should be lived.

When Jamie and Nick met in college, years earlier, they both got fascinated by the philosopher Nietzsche and his thinking.

Just like the philosopher, they both believed life has no purpose and you need to create one for yourself. And that is why Nick started coming up with twisted and dangerous games. He also got Jamie involved in them.

As Jamie’s past is deeply connected to his present and his friend’s death, Harry digs deeper to find answers and the reasons behind Jamie’s thinking and actions.

The new season is, once again, very impactful thanks to a powerful actor as the protagonist.

Matt Bomer, best known from the TV series White Collar, delivers such an amazing performance as Jamie. His character is very complicated and layered and Bomer can express all the emotions and experiences he is going through perfectly.

Additionally, his chemistry with Bill Pullman, who plays detective Ambrose, turns the season into another masterpiece!

"Look, we all have dark thoughts. We learn how to live with them. We contain them."

Just as in season one and two, The Sinner focuses more on the motive and the unconscious part of people, which always lead the main characters to commit shocking crimes that nobody can explain. And it is only with detective Ambrose’s intuitive personality, that the cases are solved. Everybody has a hidden part, connected to their past that is bound to come to the surface when they are under stress or somehow reminded of past events.

"I am not a lost cause."

The new season is just as addictive and mysterious as the previous two with only eight episodes to binge, and will have you in front of the screen for at least five hours straight. You won’t be disappointed!
