American Horror Story (2011-Present) has been famous for almost a decade as one of the most original and dark TV series out there! With very talented recurring actors and a new story every season, it has surely given fans all over the world plenty of horror and thriller scenarios! If you’ve never watched American Horror Story and you want to have a go at it, here are our favourite seasons for you!
1. Murder House:
“Normal people scare me.”
Murder House (2011) is the first season of American Horror Story and one of the most acclaimed and loved ones by fans!
The season follows the Harmons family as they move to their new house in Los Angeles. Mother Vivien (Connie Britton), father Ben (Dylan McDermott) and daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) soon discover the house is not what they expected and they will have to face dark encounters and troubling neighbours. But above all, they will find out the house is haunted and any person, who has lived and died there, remains on the property as a ghost forever…
Murder House is surely one of the most addictive seasons and has even left fans rooting for the odd, yet very loved, romance between Violet and the ghost of teenager and former resident of the house, Tate (Evan Peters).
2. Coven:
“Who’s the baddest witch in town?”
Coven (2013-2014) is one of fans' favourite seasons of AHS as it is very different from any other! Set in New Orleans, Coven follows the lives of students and teachers of a private school. But not a normal one… As it turns out, all the girls in the school are witches and descendants from Salem! Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) is the new arrival and she has to face changes, as she discovers who she truly is. Coven is surely one of the most intriguing and peculiar seasons and the New Orleans setting makes it even better!
The great performance by Jessica Lange as the most powerful witch, the “supreme”, will leave you wanting more! And if you watch it for the first time, you will fall in love with all the quirky and funny students of the school straight away!
3. Cult:
“The world is set up to humiliate us.”
Cult (2017) is personally one of my favourite seasons of AHS ever and it is surely one of the most original and shocking ones. It follows the lives of Ally (Sarah Paulson) and her wife Ivy (Alison Pill) after the election of Donald Trump as the president of the U.S. Ally, as a liberal, is destroyed by the news and her mental illness deteriorates because of it. On the other hand, Kai (Evan Peters) is quite happy with the result. Kai, as we find out, has been an extremist his whole life and things escalate quickly when he decides to run for city council. As he gets closer and closer to power, Kai builds up a following and he will soon have people devoted to him and his cause… How long will it take before it gets out of control? Cult will leave you shocked at all the twists and you will be left thinking this season’s scenario could actually happen in real life too!
4. Apocalypse:
“How can any of you defeat me, when I’ve already won?”
Apocalypse (2018) is what the fans were waiting for and for all the right reasons!
The season starts off with nuclear missiles destroying the world as we know it. Only chosen people with a specific D.N.A. and rich ones that could buy their way into it, managed to survive.
As they are brought to an Outpost, they will soon learn life is not idyllic and, although they are the only survivors on earth, that could change soon as resources are running out. When Michael (Cody Fern), who works for the mysterious “Cooperative”, comes to the Outpost to assure some of them can be moved to a safer place, people start to get suspicious. What are Michael and the Cooperative hiding? And what if the nuclear winter is just a façade for something bigger that is happening behind the scenes?
Apocalypse will leave you wondering what this season is truly about and it will change its plot drastically halfway through for something even more exciting! And you will see some beloved characters from previous seasons make a comeback as well! It won’t let you down!
5. Asylum:
“All monsters are human.”
Last but not least...Asylum (2012-2013)! It's considered as the best season of AHS ever, both by fans and critics.
The season follows journalist Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson) as she trespasses Briarcliff insane asylum, in order to write a story on the mistreatments of inmates by doctors and nuns working there. When Lana runs into the scary and evil Sister Jude (Jessica Lange), she ends up getting committed because of her homosexuality.
As a patient, Lana witnesses the abuse of the asylum herself and she finds more and more mysterious facts about the place.
Asylum is surely the best written and acted season of AHS and it will leave you shocked by the mystery and cruelty at Briarcliff asylum! And if that is not enough, there are aliens in this season as well!
So… what are you waiting for? Start watching the best seasons of American Horror Story on Netflix. I can assure you, you will be a fan too!
