5 of the Most Toxic Disney Couples

Updated: Sep 10, 2020

We have already looked at some of the most toxic TV couples, but have you ever realized that Disney has some pretty unhealthy ones as well?

The Disney couples we ship the most are proven to be the least healthy ones, and we’ve listed some of them below!

Do you spot your favorite?

1. Troy and Gabriella (High School Musical 2006 - 2008)

"I'm a lot better at goodbyes than you. I've had a ton of practice."

I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen the three well-known High School Musical movies, where lovebirds Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) set an example of what true love feels like.

They meet unexpectedly at a Karaoke bar on New Year’s Eve and end up falling in love when they’re chosen to perform together on stage. However, the two are very different with different passions and exactly that becomes a problem in their relationship.

Troy is the cool kid – the captain of the basketball team, whereas Gabriella is the new girl and book-smart. And although some may say “opposites attract”, you might think differently after Gabriella’s heartbreaking performance of “When There Was Me and You” following Troy’s unkind statement about a girl he really has some feelings for.

Aside from that, none of their friends wanted them together and their relationship slowly turned into a mess. And just imagining all the effort they had to put in just to be together was on a whole other level of exhaustion from both sides!

2. Belle and Beast (Beauty and the Beast 1991)

"Take it with you so you'll always have a way to look back and remember me."

This couple is highly rooted for, but the way they found love was far from normal and is NOT recommended!

If you’ve seen the movie, you know that after Belle’s father doesn’t return home, she goes to look for him in the woods, which is how she ends up at Beast’s dark castle full of talking objects. It turns out, her father was captured by the Beast and in order to get him released, she has to put herself in his place.

Beast gives Belle a room of her own with fancy clothes and delicious food, but his awful attitude makes Belle like him less and less every day… until she gets used to living under the same roof as him.

He starts treating her better after some time, and even surprises her with her own personal library as Belle loves to read.

Soon enough, he grows on her and she starts catching feelings for him.

And guess what, they end up getting married! Speaking of Stockholm Syndrome! Definitely not the best way to find love.

3. Alex and Mason (Wizards of Waverly Place 2007 - 2012)

"It's not my fault you've dated a bunch of losers until you met me."

Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) and her boyfriend Mason Greyback (Gregg Sulkin) are super cute together and will remain one of my favorite Disney couples ever!

However, the truth is, their relationship is far from healthy!

When Alex decides to give up her powers, she has to break up with Mason as well considering mortals cannot date werewolves. They decide to remain friends, but due to her strong love for the boy, she decides over time to re-enter the wizard competition so that she can be with Mason.

However, they end up breaking up once again due to the little crush she develops on beast tamer Chase Riprock (Nick Roux). This angers Mason and he ends up showing the “ugly” side to him, which is why Alex decides to get over him once and for all.

Mason does not give up on Alex and keeps going back to her. He stalks her and “casually” bumps into her in her new apartment, which causes her distress. Although they both love each other dearly, they are not a healthy couple! If you’ve seen the finale, you know that they end up together, but I honestly can’t imagine them lasting long term!

4. Miley and Jesse (Hannah Montana (2006 - 2011)

"Listen, I've been thinking, being with you is a real headache."

This one is easy. Miley (Miley Cyrus) was seeing her loving boyfriend Jake (Cody Linley) at the time (secretly though) and develops an unhealthy crush on popstar Jesse (Drew Roy) when she is disguised as Hannah.

Unfortunately, Jesse starts developing romantic feelings for Miley as well, and puts her in an impossible position! And as she is spending time with both, she realizes how difficult it is to choose who she wants to be with!

She is desperately waiting for a sign to make up her mind, but it is pretty clear that she has a stronger bond with Jake, and that she will most likely not end up having a long-term relationship with Jesse.

Jesse is a great guy and they’re a good fit, but I’m team Jake all the way! Which team do you root for?

5. Audrey and Ben (Descendants 2015 - 2019)

"I'm so tired of pretending. Where's my happy ending?"

They’re the children of some of our favorite Disney princesses, but how compatible are they really?

If you’ve watched Descendants, you may have realized that this picture perfect couple is really just a mess.

When the villains from “The Isle” move to “Auradon”, they are greeted by Ben (Mitchell Hope) and immediately, you see a spark between him and Mal (Dove Cameron). This triggers Audrey (Sarah Jeffery) and her jealousy is evident through the way she behaves around both Ben and Mal from then on.

Also, it seems like Audrey is more focused on becoming the queen of Auradon than being with Ben! We do not ship this toxic couple and we are really happy Ben finds true happiness and love with Mal!
